The Estate Kitchen

Children experience the life of a kitchen maid in 1871, taking on cleaning chores and helping to cook biscuits on the range.  The lifestyles of the aristocracy are discussed, including the types of food eaten, how it was served and meal times.  Aprons will be provided.  

Links with History Unit 2: Houses and Homes, DT Unit 5D: Biscuits, and incorporates numeracy and science aspects of the curriculum.

Available throughout the year.  Approx time 1 hour

The Laundry

Children will experience the labour intensive chore of the weekly wash at Shugborough in the 'wet' and 'dry' laundries.   They will each wash, starch and iron a square of cotton cloth, 'clothe' the rollers for the box mangle, and load stockings onto leg shapers. 

Links with History Unit 2: Houses and Homes, and incorporates numeracy and science aspects of the curriculum.
