Shugborough Education

Shugborough, set in the heart of Staffordshire, attracts 30,000 schoolchildren a year.  They take part in a wide range of tours and demonstrations from Milling in the early-nineteenth century,  to World War II and the Blitz, in the twentieth century.

The estate promotes lifelong learning and visitors can experience life from days gone by in original, restored or reconstructed environments including working kitchens and a Victorian laundry and schoolroom.

Visitors are encouraged to 'join in' as much as possible to get a hands-on feel for life on the estate. Youngsters might have a go at using a dolly-peg in the laundry, or learn to write on a slate in the schoolroom, or help the cook to bake biscuits in the kitchen.

Our programme has been designed with the requirements of the National Curriculum in mind. We also offer tailor-made packages for pupils and students of all ages. If you are interested in these, please contact the Education Team on 01889 881388 who will be happy to discuss your requirements.

A FREE preliminary visit is available for teachers and is strongly recommended. Even if you are a regular visitor, a pre-tour visit by the party organiser is beneficial since there is always something new to see at Shugborough.

WHATS NEW - BRAND NEW TOURS
The youngest of our visitors at foundation stage will have the time of their lives on our ‘Little Gardeners Tour’ which utilises our magnificent restored Walled Garden as the focal point for a journey with our Georgian Walled Gardeners packed full of exploration and lots of opportunity to smell and feel the unusual and commonplace produce being cultivated.  They even get the chance to plant something of their own!

In ‘Lifetime and Landscape’, children at key stage 2 and 3 come face to face Shugborough’s very own Thomas Anson and both he and the teacher guide the learners through three exciting activities exploring the role of Thomas Anson as a Botanist, a Collector and as Patron of the Arts

Also new for 2010 is an amazing opportunity to get close and personal with one of the nations most influential and recognised figures of modern history, ’Florence Nightingale’.   In this fabulous new tour the famous Lady with The Lamp interacts directly with the children in an experience which focuses on the Victorian timeline and uses our unique collections to cover topics such as transport, health & hygiene and geography.
